A suspect believed to have placed pipe bombs near the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee headquarters in January 2021 has been arrested after being at large for nearly five years.
Brian Cole Jr., 30, was arrested in Woodbridge, Virginia, 23 miles from Washington D.C., and was charged with transporting explosives and attempted destruction, The Christian Post reported.
During a press conference on Thursday, U.S. District Attorney Pam Bondi, alongside U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro, FBI Director Kash Patel, and FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, shared that Cole faces a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison on the first charge and between five and 20 years behind bars for the latter charge. She added that Cole could face additional charges as the “investigation is ongoing.”
Bondi noted that Cole’s arrest was made possible based on existing information that the DOJ had in its possession for “four long years,” alleging that the Biden administration opted not to prioritize the case due to political reasons.
Bondi claimed that the Biden administration chose not to prioritize the investigation for political reasons, after noting that Cole's arrest was made possible by intelligence that the DOJ had for "four long years."
“There was no new tip, there was no new witness, just good diligent police work and prosecutorial work.”
“When you attack American citizens, when you attack our institutions of legislation, when you attack our nation’s capital, you attack the very being of our way of life, and this FBI and this Department of Justice stand here to tell you that we will always refute it and combat it,” Patel contended. “We will provide the safest country the nation has ever seen under President Trump’s leadership.”
Surveillance footage showed Cole wearing a face mask as he dropped off pipe bombs near the headquarters of both the DNC and the RNC between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 5, 2021.
His 2017 Nissan Sentra was near the scene of the crime. The pipe bombs were discovered the next day, the same day that the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot took place.
More additional information about Cole in a criminal complaint filed against him on Thursday, alleging that the suspect “purchased multiple items consistent with the components that were used to manufacture the pipe bombs” throughout 2019 and 2020.
