A Prayer for Moving Families

“I declare the end from the beginning, and ancient times from what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and all my good pleasure I will accomplish.’ (Isaiah 46:10 ESV).

Life has a way of surprising you with journeys you would never quite expect. For many, the intention is to stay in one place permanently, but as life has a way of unfolding, those plans can change. According to University Hospitals, moving is among the top three most stressful events in life, which is why it is vital to be rooted in prayer throughout a move. When God is at the center of an action, even when it is intense, there is a security in knowing that you do not walk that path alone.

Location is important to the Lord, for He is intentional with all that He instructs and moves us to do. In Genesis 12, the Lord commands Abram, who would later be renamed to Abraham, to leave the land he had known for all of his life. Scripture tells us, “Now the Lord said to Abram, 'Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you.” (Genesis 12:1 ESV). Can you imagine the questions that arose from family members or neighbors? We must also consider that U-Haul did not yet exist, and Abram was not a young man, but he still obeyed. We are told in Genesis 12:4, “So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. And Abram took Sarai, his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people that they had acquired in Haran, and they set out to go to the land of Canaan.” (Genesis 12:4 ESV). This was not a temporary move for them; they left nothing behind but the days gone by, and they obeyed what the Lord told them to do, despite not knowing what awaited them in Canaan.

When Abram and his family at last arrived in Canaan, they were met with unexpected company, for the land was already inhabited. It did not matter how the circumstances appeared at the time, but rather, what mattered most was what God would say, instruct, or assure next. In the same way, believers today may find that when they do move as God instructs or when He opens a door for a move, what awaits them can, at first, appear counterintuitive. Just because something is not simple or free of obstacles does not mean it is not from God, nor does it mean He does not have a greater plan moving forward. What is vital is to listen for His voice, to be aware of His guiding hand, and to rest in His provision for every step.

Abram did as God instructed, and when he arrived in the new land, a promise awaited him as a welcome gift. In Genesis 12:7 we are told, “Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So, he built an altar there for the Lord, who had appeared to him. From there he moved to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east.” (Genesis 12:7, ESV). This promise was not something given lightly, for its impact and legacy still hold weight to this very day in the Holy Lands. God did indeed fulfill His promise to Abram, but the road to that destination would require patience, trust, endurance, and loyalty to the Lord. In the same way, those who are moving today must recognize that these actions are not solely for the present day but impact generations to come. When the “big picture” lens is used, there is also a sense of hope to keep going when things do indeed become stressful or uncertain. Know that when you move with the Lord, you move with His hand upon you every step of the way.

Let's Pray

Father God,

We lift up today families or individuals who are planning a move. We know that even a move across town can have a domino effect on the lives of those around them, future generations, and those making the move themselves. Lord, we know that You see the whole plan from start to end. With that in mind, we pray, Lord, for assurance for those taking leaps of faith that they will be met with solid ground that can only come from You, and we pray for conviction of spirit that they know full well that You sent them. We pray, Father, for all that will be required of them in the process from packing to finding a new dwelling to making new friends to connecting to a new church body. Lord, may they be met not only with assistance from You, but may each member of the family moving know within themselves that You have a purpose for this move in their lives and in their stories. May this experience be one that glorifies Your Name and serves as a testimony of Your creativity, goodness, and destiny for them, lifting up others to trust You in the same way as well.

We thank You for all that You are doing in the lives of Your children.
