Influence does make a difference in high stakes politics.
Consider President Trump’s recent announcement that offshore drilling for natural gas and crude oil was now open off America’s coastlines. That sent Florida politicos scrambling.
Both Florida Senator Marco Rubio and Governor Rick Scott got to work to convince the President to rescind the order to save our pristine beaches, which draw millions of tourists, key to Florida’s branding and revenue.
Their quick lobbying proved successful as Trump’s Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke announced that Florida is now off the list.
That’s good news for Floridians as well as good politics for Republicans.
Any hint of a tainted beach in one part of our state, has a negative impact on all our beaches as tourists tend to cancel all Florida plans at any news of an oil spill.
