“Opening Day: Issues to Watch During The 2022 Florida Legislative Session”

Bill Bunkley with Something to Think About

Today is the opening day of the 2022 Florida Legislative Session. It’s a frigid day in Tally, and that symbolizes the atmosphere between the dominant party of the Republicans and the vastly outnumbered Democrats.

Expect Governor Ron DeSantis to receive solid support for his legislative agenda. He’s the standard-bearer for the Republicans by standing up to President Biden’s federal agencies' overreach of Florida’s states’ rights.

COVID variants will take center stage as they make budget planning and estimating a daunting challenge. Estimating both revenue and expenses is a moving target. Thankfully our revenue was $ 2.6 billion above estimates for the last year and $6 billion remain in unspent federal stimulus.

Abortion, education, and redistricting are the other top issues I’ll be watching.

Bill Bunkley is a 15-year veteran Salem Radio talk show host based in west-central /Florida, airing weekdays from 3 to 6 pm. Bill is also President of the Florida Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, which serves as legislative consultant to the Florida Baptist State Convention (Southern Baptist Churches throughout Florida), among other churches and entities. He has served as a legislative consultant to the Convention for the last 24 years at the state capitol in Tallahassee.
