A big reveal came on the legislature’s opening day as SB 46 by State Senator Keli Stargel and HB 5 by Erin Grall were released publicly. Portions of their proposed bills loosely follows the Mississippi abortion law pending before the Supreme Court. It’s called the Fetal & Infant Mortality Act.
It is a broad, comprehensive package that will track and access a variety of mortality risk factors to unborn babies and infants via tobacco use and in utero drug exposure. Florida’s Department of Health would create review committees statewide to assess mortality statistics.
A significant provision in the bill bans abortions after 15 weeks except for a “fatal fetal abnormality”, confirmed by two doctors, which is yet to be defined. Abortion doctors would have additional reporting requirements as well.
