It's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. day and with it an opportunity to reflect on the status of Civil Rights and race relations in America.
I wonder what the Alabama Baptist pastor, best remembered for his commitment to nonviolence and peaceful dialog, would say if he were still among us.
Many this day will evoke his legacy and speak on Dr. King’s behalf, but I’m certain he would not be comfortable with all that will be claimed in his name.
Since King’s 1968 assassination there’s been much progress in Civil Rights and race relations, though accomplishments in the last decade are arguably disappointing. Much more is yet to be accomplished.
Dr. King’s approach of dialog and discussion is still more effective than yelling and name calling.
And that’s still a valuable and timeless lesson for America today.
