Today is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It’s a day to reflect on civil rights and race relations in America.
I wonder what the Alabama Baptist pastor, best remembered for nonviolence and peaceful dialog, would say if he were still among us.
Many will evoke his legacy, speak on Dr. King’s behalf, but I’m certain he would not be comfortable with all that is claimed in his name.
Since King’s 1968 assassination, there’s been much progress in Civil Rights and race relations, though accomplishments in the last decade are arguably disappointing. Much is yet to be accomplished.
Dr. King’s approach to dialog and discussion remains more effective than today’s personal attacks between opposing politicians.
And that’s still a valuable and timeless lesson for America today.
