Conservatives wanting to combat repeat offenders passed the three strikes and you are out crime bill. Its goal was to get the bad guys and gals off our streets.
Now that prisons are overcrowded, political leaders and law enforcement are reconsidering alternatives to deal with those offenders.
In a similar issue, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister has taken the lead in the Adult Pre-Arrest Diversion Program. It allows persons arrested for first-time minor offenses to confidentially participate in a program that, when completed, keeps them from having a criminal record that could them cost them their job and much more.
In the pilot program, most busts were for marijuana use and shoplifting.
I support Sheriff Chronister’s position that people do make mistakes and this program should be supported for those who can truly learn from their mistakes.
