The Florida House Tourism and Gaming Control Subcommittee just may have made national history.
That subcommittee conducted a hearing considering testimony by a panel of experts on the crack cocaine of gambling; slot machines.
Stop Predatory Gambling’s National Director Les Bernal commended the Florida House as the only governmental body nationwide to hold a hearing exclusively on slots during his extended years of testifying around the country.
Credit Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran for that national distinction.
Dr. Natasha Dow Schull, author of the book “Addicted by Design” and No Casinos’ President John Sowinski also testified about THE most highly addictive form of gambling.
State-sanctioned gambling is the only occurrence where Florida encourages its residents to lose money and engage in an activity that is harmful in so many ways.
It is time for that encouragement to stop.
