I recently saw a photo of an armed guardian officer at Manatee Arts High School roaming the halls with a long semiautomatic rifle. The photo greatly alarmed me and will no doubt trigger an even bigger discussion in our legislature than whether to arm teachers.

Now I support armed school guardians and certain qualified armed teachers in public schools. But I am also concerned about the effects on students by the campus security activities they are exposed to.

Toting long rifles around a high school campus as a matter of routine is unacceptable. Prepositioning long rifles at strategic locations around the school in secured safes for quick and easy access in an emergency is acceptable.

Let’s not overexpose children to a “Fort Knox” mentality on their school campuses.
