"The President’s Weekend”

Bill Bunkley with Something To Think About

President’s day weekend is a time to honor the men who have served us as chief executive officer. President’s Day itself is celebrated annually on the third Monday of each February.

In 1880 the holiday was initially celebrated in Washington D.C. to honor President George Washington’s birthday on February 22. That celebration later became a nationwide holiday in 1885.

In 1968 Congress decided to change the holiday to President’s Day, with an effective date in 1971. During the debate on the holiday change, sensitivity over watering down the importance of President Lincoln’s birthday on February 12 was a major concern. In the end, a day honoring all Presidents won out, always celebrated on a Monday so the nation’s labor force could have a three day weekend.

So, enjoy President’s Weekend.
