"Florida High School Vocation Training Track a Good Idea”

Bill Bunkley with Something To Think About

Not all kids are heading to college after high school, and it is past time to provide excellent alternatives to prepare them to pursue vocational careers.

A pair of proposed bills in the Florida House and Senate are set for consideration to speak to this issue.

SB 770 and HB 661 call for a “Career and Technical Education” track for high school students. In this course of study, a student would not take higher college prep classes, instead would engage in work programs related to his or her vocational interest. They would require 18 credits, not 24 to graduate along with a minimum 2.0 GPA.

Students will be required to pass all year-end standardized testing.

If passed this session, students would be illegible for this program in the fall of this year.

This is a good proposal, one that was the norm years ago.
