Remember the classic line from the Jerry Maguire film “Show me the money?’

It will be reprised by the Florida Senate and House of Representatives Appropriation’s Chairpersons over the next couple of months. That’s because our state coffers face a $2.7 billion shortfall because of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many of the state projects seeking funding will be cut or eliminated. That’s going to create many unhappy businesses, organizations, and Floridians.

Get ready to hear the word “essential” often repeated as the fight for limited revenue echoes across Florida for their pet allocations. Every funding request will claim the label essential.

The Legislature and Governor get to decide what is essential and what is not. And that’s this session’s toughest challenge.

Bill Bunkley is a 15-year veteran Salem Radio talk show host based in west-central Florida, airing weekdays 3 to 6 pm. Bill is also President of the Florida Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, which serves as legislative consultant to the Florida Baptist State Convention (Southern Baptist Churches throughout Florida), among other churches and entities. He has served as legislative consultant to the Convention for the last 24 years at the state capitol in Tallahassee.
