“Let the Session Begin”

An annual rite of passage has arrived again at our state capitol of Tallahassee.

Florida became the 27th state on March 3, 1854, with the 1st meeting of the legislature occurring later in June.

Tallahassee was chosen as the state capitol in 1823 after the new territory’s legislative council met its first year in Pensacola in 1822 and St Augustine in 1823. It would later become the state capitol because it was halfway between the two cities.

The legislators would meet biannually until 1969. The Florida Constitution was changed at that point, calling for the legislature to meet every year.

There would be at least six attempts to move the capital out of Tallahassee to a more centralized location, the last being Orlando. All failed.

So, the legislature opens again today in Tallahassee.

Let the Session begin, and I’ll be there.
