“Do You Live in a Florida Sanctuary County”
Bill Bunkley with Today’s Something To Think About
Do you live in a Florida “Sanctuary County” for undocumented immigrants?
A Sanctuary County is one having “limited cooperation with ICE, the U. S. Immigration and Custom’s Enforcement Unit, specifically by placing local conditions on honoring immigration detainers.”
Broward, Palm Beach, Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Hernando counties are all in some fashion labeled sanctuary counties.
But a bill moving in the Florida House and soon to be heard in the Senate would impose fines and other penalties on any county or municipal government, including local law enforcement, who will not fully cooperate with ICE.
HB 697 by Representative Larry Metz (R) from Groveland and SB 786 by Senator Aaron Bean (R) of Jacksonville would put the teeth necessary in Florida statutes to enforce federal immigration law in Florida.
Look for this passionate Florida debate to gain the national spotlight real soon.
