Every year stories emerge from the Florida press corps about “pork barrel spending” here in Tallahassee.
Now “pork” is always a challenging issue for legislators who self-described themselves as fiscal conservatives.
On the one hand, they pride themselves on being public budget Hawks, while on the other hand their hometown powerbrokers just come to expect that THEIR local legislators will “bring home the bacon.”
To the legislature’s credit, pork barrel projects are now more in the light of day than yesteryear when they were slipped in during the midnight hour of the final day.
It’s great amusement to watch when the Hawks are asked to defend the obvious hypocrisy. Veteran legislators respond quite skillfully with well-rehearsed justifications, while the freshmen can only marvel at their mentor’s expertise at bringing home the bacon.
And so the Tallahassee circle of life continues.
