It’s “green” across America today as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
St. Patrick was a fifth-century Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland who is believed to be born in Scotland.
His father was a deacon in the Christian church. God called St. Patrick to evangelize the British Isles, and he built the first church in Ireland.
A little-known fact is that the Catholic church declared St. Patrick the patron saint of engineers. He introduced Roman engineering to church buildings to utilize lime mortar in leu of stacking large stones. He also brought “arch” architecture s to the church buildings that’s still seen throughout Ireland today.
In 1601 the first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in St. Augustine, Florida.
Irish American immigrants transformed the day from a religious celebration to one commemorating their Irish heritage.
