The Florida Legislature is considering an idea not adopted in any other state.

Testing one’s genetic profile is something that is disallowed by federal law when determining a person’s health insurance rating.

But Florida legislators are considering banning genetic testing for life insurance policies via House Bill 879 and Senate Bill 258.

When a person is rated for life insurance, the issuing company is going to evaluate the next 30-40 years of that person’s life in calculating a rating which will dictate the policy premium.

Life insurance advocates are crying foul in that they very much want to use every tool available to them when considering the multi-year risk.

This issue is an interesting one as we move through the session and I have not a clue if it will pass or not.
