Suppose you didn’t watch on TV or listen to our radio coverage of the NCAA National Basketball Championship Game between the Florida Gators and the Houston Cougars. In that case, you may well have missed the college hoops game of the century.
For Gator fans like my family, the night was a hand-wringing affair. The Cougars led with their smothering “junkyard dog” of physical defense for all but one minute in the entire game.
The Gator who got the team into the championship series, Walter Clayton, Jr., didn’t have a single basket in the first half. He scored his first basket with only 8 minutes remaining in the game. But then, Clayton Jr. came alive.
Within the last minute, the Gators took the lead 65-63, and the Gators’ smothering defense shut down the stunned Cougars. Game over!
Congrats, Gators, for a national championship that we’ll NEVER forget.
