It was early morning in Israel but by 2:00 am the wait was well worth it for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara. His party, the Likud, soundly defeated the rival Blue and White party opening up a clear path for Netanyahu to negotiate a right wing coalition to form his majority in the Knesset.
Netanyahu will now be the longest serving Prime Minister in Israel’s history and the first Prime Minister born in Israel since the founding of the modern state in 1948.
His American ties run deep as he is a graduate of MIT and Harvard. Before that at the age of 18 he served in the Israeli defense forces for 5 years as a commando. In 1976 his brother Jonathan was killed in the raid on Entebbe, Uganda to save airline hostages.
