“A Somber Day in the Florida House”
I’m Bill Bunkley with Something To Think About.
For two decades plus I’ve been a witness to Florida legislative history.
It happened again as the Florida House of Representatives passed out HB 7115 and HB 631.
HB 7115 dealt with the Arthur G. Dozier Reform School for boys previously located in Mariana, Florida. Over its 111-year existence, unspeakable atrocities including physical and sexual abuse and death occurred at the institution. The legislation provides reinternment for boys found buried there, their graves to have appropriate memorial markers.
HB 631dealt with a state apology to young African-Americans known as the Groveland Four and their families: Earnest Thomas, Charles Greenlee, Samuel Shepherd and Walter Irvin. In 1948 they were hunted down by a massive posse, and accused of the rape of a 17 year-old Lake County white woman, marking another instance of injustice in Florida history.
Both events will now be appropriately remembered.
