“Nation’s 911 Network Suffers Possible Cyber Attack”
Bill Bunkley’s “This Is Something to Think About Commentary”
Air Date Friday, April 19, 2024
Something strange happened throughout South Dakota and parts of Nebraska, Nevada, and Texas.
A widespread 911 outage blocked residents from contacting 911 for emergency services for a couple of hours.
Early speculation points to a possible cyber attack.
The Department of Homeland Security warned that cyber attacks targeting 911 systems are more likely because the nationwide system is now integrated into an Internet protocol.
Imagine a crippling nationwide 911 outage triggered by a foreign adversary in a vulnerable moment of attack.
Or, how about an attack that turns off the nation’s power grid? That would be even more debilitating. In the electronic digital age, everything depends on reliable electricity.
China, Russia, and others constantly search and test for vulnerable entry points.
And this may have been one of those tests.
