I’m Bill Bunkley with Something To Think About.

The final days of any legislative session always hold a few surprises, surprises that are already surfacing. 

The annual Florida House and Senate budget negotiations worth billions were at a standstill. Then Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran and Senate President Joe Negron initiated direct talks between themselves, something that’s usually the last step in the budget process reserved for a few unresolved money issues. Overnight, negotiations were moving forward: maybe.

The House’s session long anti-gambling expansion platform is a head scratcher, as they have now agreed that pari-mutuels could cease running live races, paving the way to be transformed into local casinos, subject to local referendum.

And Walmart, Target, and others by a one-vote victory in the House can now peddle hard alcohol on their store shelves.

The early winners in Tallahassee this session are clearly the gambling and alcohol special interest groups.
