 “Say No To Pari-Mutuel Decoupling” 

I’m Bill Bunkley with Something To Think About.

Talks between the Florida House and Senate over  “decoupling” of live events from pari-mutuel venues remains one of the session’s most controversial issues. 

Pari-mutuel greyhound tracks and jai alai frontons hosting live wagering events are in as much demand as livery stables became when cars replaced horse and buggies.

Livery stables closed down; the free market principal of supply and demand prevailed.

The trouble is, gambling proponents in the legislature won’t allow free market forces to dictate the demise of the dying pari-mutuel industry, following in the pathway of other outdated Florida businesses.    

Somehow proponents believe the state has an obligation to prop them up, throwing them a life ring by giving them the right to convert to future neighborhood casinos. 

If legislators allow that, social costs to the state will be disastrous.

Legislators, decouple yourselves from this foolhardy proposal.
