“Stagflation: What Is It”
Bill Bunkley’s “This Is Something to Think About”
Air Date Thursday, May 8, 2025
The much-anticipated Federal Reserve meeting decision is in, and Chairman Jerome Powell and his fellow Fed governors voted to keep interest rates at the current rates. Their conclusion is contrary to President Trump’s wishes that the Fed should have lowered rates at this meeting.
However, as the Fed's decision came in as expected, what was unexpected was their concern that stagflation may be lurking soon.
What is stagflation?
Stagflation is characterized by a combination of high inflation, slow economic growth, and high unemployment. It's an economic condition where prices are rising while the economy is not growing, and a growing number of people are out of work.
The possibility of stagflation only adds to the uncertainty about where the economy is headed and what the appropriate Fed interest rate policy should be to complement economic realities.
