"Losing Bet: Florida Supremes Say No to Slot Referendums"

I’m Bill Bunkley with Something To Think About.

Anti-gambling proponents won a major battle in the ongoing siege by those who would wallpaper Florida with slot machines from coast to coast.

Florida’s Supreme Court dealt a temporary death blow to the pari-mutuel cartel of dozens of gambling venues who bet the court would do what the legislature wouldn’t; that is, authorize local conversion of greyhound, horse, and Jai Alai gambling facilities into full-fledged, one armed bandit parlors.

Tiny Gretna, Florida, northwest of Tallahassee, passed a referendum to open slot machines at their horse track. Greedy to get their own “crack cocaine” like devices, Brevard, Duval, Gadsden, Lee, Hamilton, Palm Beach, St. Lucie and Washington counties passed similar referendums.

Well, they all had losing bets as the 6-0 ruling found that without legislative or constitutional authority, those referendums are meaningless.

And with that, family friendly Florida dodged a huge hit.
