It’s Memorial Day Weekend in America.

It marks a solemn tradition with Southern roots dating back to the post-Civil War era. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it was a day when Confederate flags and flowers decorated the graves of Southern Army soldiers.

It’s a day we honor the extraordinary heroes who understood freedom and loyalty to their country.

Duty, Honor, and Sacrifice describe these heroes. 

Let us express our profound gratitude for those who fought and made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. Let us also remember and honor those who continue to serve, ready to defend and make that sacrifice if necessary.

The heroes we remember today were not just soldiers but beloved family members, wives, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, brothers, and sisters.

Or maybe….your very best friend.

We thank God for their sacrificial service.

Bill Bunkley is an 18-year veteran Salem Media talk show host based in Tampa. The Bill Bunkley Show airs weekdays across central Florida from 3 to 6 pm. Bill is also President of the Florida Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, which serves as the legislative consultant to the Florida Baptist State Convention (Southern Baptist Convention Churches), among other churches and entities. He has served as the legislative consultant to the Florida Baptist State Convention for the last 28 years at the state capitol in Tallahassee. By the Grace of his Lord Jesus, he is today a cancer survivor diagnosed in 2018 with AML Leukemia, having successfully undergone a bone marrow transplant that same year. His wife is Toni, son is Zac, and they attend Idlewild Baptist Church.
