“Newborn Drug Babies: A Horrible Way to Begin Life”
Bill Bunkley with Something to Think About
Moms who abuse illegal drugs during their pregnancy have grown to alarming numbers. In Hillsborough County 25% of kids taken into Foster Care are babies. Many born to a mom using opioids, crack cocaine or who knows what drug.
An opioid addicted newborn must go into a neonatal intensive care unit to be administered methadone in a detox process. These sensory babies have to be shielded from bright lights, and loud sounds.
In Hillsborough County I am encouraged that through grants and addition funding Eckerd Connects and the Healthy Start Coalition will jointly add staff to county clinics who will screen women during their pregnancy for both drug abuse and signs of domestic violence, followed up with counseling.
Being born with a drug addiction is a horrible way to begin life.
