“A Turbulent Week for Control of the Southern Baptist Convention”

The annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention is underway in Nashville, TN.
As our nation is divided on numerous issues, so too are many of the 16,000+ SBC Messengers in the Music City this week representing their home churches.
Not since the struggle for control of the SBC, known as the 1979 “Conservative Resurgence,” have emotions and divisions risen to this week’s intensity.
Topping the list of issues is who will be the Convention President and the direction he will take the denomination, transparency in combating and reporting sexual abuse, transparency in convention business affairs, and future policy regarding the controversial Critical Race Theory.
So what should be the future mission of the SBC? As a Southern Baptist, I’ll share some thoughts on that tomorrow.
Bill Bunkley is a 15-year veteran Salem Radio talk show host based in west-central Florida, airing weekdays 3 to 6 pm. Bill is also President of the Florida Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, which serves as legislative consultant to the Florida Baptist State Convention (Southern Baptist Churches throughout Florida), among other churches and entities. He has served as legislative consultant to the Convention for the last 24 years at the state capitol in Tallahassee.
