“Governor DeSantis Chooses Not to Warn About Lottery Addiction"

Bill Bunkley with Something to Think About

Governor DeSantis made a rare mistake in judgement. He vetoed alerting lottery players about becoming addicted gamblers.

The language that was to be printed on lottery tickets: “Warning: Lottery games may be addictive” or “Play Responsibly.”

DeSantis’ reasoning, “This bill reduces the Lottery’s ability to maximize revenues for education and negatively impacts Florida students.”

Governor, what about thousands of poor people across the state that are addicted each payday Friday, in our poorest zip codes, ignorantly buying handfuls of lottery tickets they can’t afford instead of milk, eggs and bread for their families? What about trying to protect them?

And what does the state payout in social services for addicted gambler’s families?

It’s wrong to fund education on the backs of the poor.
