“Shutting Down Political Discourse Not A Democratic Principle”

Bill Bunkley With Today’s Something To Think About

What would America look like without open, political discourse?

Well, it would resemble what transpired in St. Petersburg when Mayoral and City Council candidates gathered for a debate at the downtown Hilton.

It was a textbook scene right out of Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals” and the more contemporary disruptors, former President Obama’s “Organizing for Action” crowd.

The interrupters, who followed those two playbooks and successfully shut down the debate that prompted a call to police to swarm to the Hilton, were the International People’s Democratic Uhuru Movement.

The name Uhuru implies they are a “democratic” organization.

But let’s be clear; what this organization demonstrated that night was neither democratic nor in support of democracy or its principals.

Mob rule has nothing to do with “government by the people.”

Shutting down debates, town hall meetings and political discourse is not a democratic principle.
