 “Happy 130th Tampa”

Bill Bunkley With Today’s Something To Think About

Tampa is 130.

As a native Tampanian, I have fond memories of growing up in the “Cigar City.”

When I was a little tot, I remember weekly, Saturday morning “coffee” visits with George and Sadie Bunkley, my grandparents. They lived a block south of Grand Central Boulevard, today known as Kennedy Boulevard, on Albany Avenue. As for Walter and Laura Bunkley, my parents, we lived way out on St. Isabell Street, near Raymond James Stadium, when N. Dale Mabry Highway was a two lane country road, winding through cow pastures and citrus groves.

Those visits alternated between both homes until my granddad in his 80’s declared we lived “too far out in the country” for them to visit us.

Imagine that, Raymond James Stadium, too far out in the country!

Tampa, you’ve come a long way in 130 years.
