My family and I have returned from a secluded and COVID-19 safe week in the picturesque Maggie Valley in North Carolina. We were delighted to escape our home for the fresh mountain air.

But we were appalled as we drove back home through Helen, Ga., known by tourists for its Bavarian architecture, and tubing down the Chattahoochee River. 

Tourists overran the tiny town. It took 40 minutes in bumper to bumper traffic to get to the city square, and the streets were wall-to-wall people, including a line of 500 people, shoulder to shoulder, with zero social distancing queued up for the river-tubing.

99% of the people in line had no masks.  

If so many continue to ignore social distancing, wearing masks and washing their hands, only God knows how bad this spread will get.
