“The Unacceptable Case of Charlie Gard”
Bill Bunkley with Something To Think About
Who should make the final decision about the best interests of a child’s health: The parents or the government?
Look no further than the heartbreaking case of little Charlie Gard in the U. K. to see how a centralized, federal healthcare system really works.
In the U. K., the government decides who lives and dies, backed up by the not so humane European Court of Human Rights.
For months Charlie’s parents valiantly fought the courts for Charlie’s life, for the right to take Charlie out of the U. K. for specialized treatment.
They were repeatedly denied.
Now we learned from the American doctor who went to examine Charlie and had hoped to treat him here, that it was too late. The months long legal blockade had eclipsed any chance earlier treatment might have proven successful.
The U.K.’s “death panel” decision is callous and inhumane.
It’s also unacceptable, totally unacceptable.
