“Accountability: New Florida Education Sheriff in Town”

Bill Bunkley with Something to Think About

The education of the state’s children is a top priority of Florida’s Legislature. It’s also a controversial one.

In past years the legislature would annually allocate specific funding for specific education requirements to the state’s 67 school boards. But in reality the county school boards would take the money and not necessarily spend it where the legislature directed it.

That paradigm is vanishing as there’s a new Florida Education Sheriff in town, state Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran.

If the name sounds familiar it should be, he is the past Speaker of the Florida House. And in his prior political life he knows full well how local school districts ignored legislative directives.

But don’t expect that practice to continue as accountability is Corcoran’s top priority.
