Interest rates are tumbling in America. Is it a sign of an impending recession or will it result in additional stimulus to the economy?
It depends on who you talk to.
The rates on the 2 year and 10 year Treasury notes inverted for the first time since 2007, meaning the 2 year interest rate was trading at a higher rate than the 10 year. More times than not, in the past, an inversion pointed to a following slowdown in the economy, a recession.
But with record mortgage financing and attractive borrowing rates for all sorts of other items, some say the refinancing will free up more money for consumers to deploy in buying more products, thus an economic stimulus.
So is the U. S. poised to join the global recession, or buck the trend and keep the economic expansion going?
Only time will tell.
