“Hillsborough Transportation Tax in Legislative Crosshairs”

Last November Hillsborough County residents got caught up in the “Vote Yes” fever that swept many ballot questions into the approval column. The citizens initiated 1% Hillsborough transportation transit tax was approved by 57% of county voters.
Two lawsuits were lodged against the tax by Bob Emerson and Commissioner Stacy White. Both have maintained all along the language was unconstitutional in structure; both appealed a local court decision to the Florida Supreme Court.
The Florida House and Senate now oppose the citizen initiative; both are filing briefs in with the high court.
Life is getting more complicated for the group sponsoring the tax increase, “Leaders of All for Transportation,” and they may be looking at a do-over to obtain their objective.
