How many of you were coin collectors as kids? Some of you still collect coins today.
Soon the staple of our nation’s coinage will vanish.
The most recognizable American coin is the copper penny. President Abraham Lincoln is the coin’s superstar: his image on the front, with the words “In God We Trust,” and the Lincoln Memorial on the back.
But the time has come for old Abe to retire. His 1-cent coin is the latest casualty of rising inflation. The House of Representatives voted to retire old Abe’s coin with the passage of the “Common Cents Act.”
Who will replace old Abe?
President Thomas Jefferson’s nickel will become the nation’s lowest-denomination coin, with cash totals rounded to the nearest five cents instead of the nearest penny.
And that’s rising inflation for your cash transactions.
