The Legislature has gathered in Tallahassee for week one of committee meetings for the 2020 legislative session. The Florida Senate wasted no time diving into the controversial issues of mass killings and guns.

Former Senate President Tom Lee opened the discussion in his Infrastructure and Security Committee Monday considering laws that, in theory, would curtail mass violence.

White nationalism, guns, the state’s “red flag” law, and mental health are the areas that will get the most attention.

But with next year being an election year, the unified silence by Republicans on the committee when asked by Lee if they thought Florida had too many gun laws, was a clear indication that the Republican led legislature has no appetite to pass any gun restricting legislation next year.
