It’s D-Day for Hurricane Helena across Florida, and all your storm preparations should be complete. If local authorities advised you to evacuate, I hope you wisely heeded their advice.

Today, as she passes by in the Gulf of Mexico, is not a day to venture out sightseeing. With tropical force winds and torrential rain prompting flash flooding, your place is to shelter in place.

If you encounter strong winds, move to the room of your home directly opposite those winds. Stay away from all windows.

Watch out for down power lines when Helena has passed, especially in standing water and for weakened tree branches overhead. Post-hurricane injuries and fatalities from chainsaws and ladders are always of concern.

Stay safe: that’s priority one.
