As the sun rises over the Florida Peninsula, “devastation” will be the one-word description of Hurricane Helene’s legacy in the annals of our state’s history.
We have just witnessed a record-setting super-powerful tropical cyclone that ONLY by the Grace of God stayed offshore until she focused her massive devastation on Florida’s Big Bend area.
Helene's winds swept hundreds of miles across our entire state. If Helene's eye had tracked just a few miles to the east, we would have witnessed historic devastation not only in the Big Bend area but also up and down Florida's West Coast.
As it stands, many of our dunes and beautiful white sand beaches are sadly washed away.
But the blessing amid all this devastation is the fact that with early warnings and many Floridians heeding those warnings, we have dodged a massive loss of life.
Bill Bunkley is an 18-year veteran Salem Media talk show host based in Tampa. The Bill Bunkley Show airs weekdays across central Florida from 3 to 6 pm. Bill is also President of the Florida Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, which serves as the legislative consultant to the Florida Baptist State Convention (Southern Baptist Convention Churches), among other churches and entities. He has served as the legislative consultant to the Florida Baptist State Convention for the last 28 years at the state capitol in Tallahassee. By the Grace of his Lord Jesus, he is today a cancer survivor diagnosed in 2018 with AML Leukemia, having successfully undergone a bone marrow transplant that same year. His wife is Toni, son is Zac, and they attend Idlewild Baptist Church.
