“Irma’s Economic Impact”
Bill Bunkley with Something To Think About
Legislators assessing for the first time in Tallahassee Hurricane Irma’s devastating impact have reasons to be very concerned along with reasons to be considerably relieved.
Irma will set the state back billions of dollars. The silver lining is that the price tag could have been so much higher.
Legislators learned that state revenues will take an immediate hit while homeowners put off purchases while awaiting home repairs, from a scarce list of available contractors.
Unemployment will go up as some businesses have not reopened, others will never come back.
Florida’s economic foundation rests upon two major sectors: tourism and agriculture.
Florida’s agricultural losses look to be $ 2.5 billion.
And though tourism also took a hit, the plan is to bump up out-of-state tourism marketing to shore up those revenues.
Irma certainly roughed us up, but she didn’t break us.
We’ll be back
