Today is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It’s a day to reflect on America's civil rights and race relations.
I wonder what the Alabama Baptist pastor, best remembered for nonviolence and peaceful dialog, would say if he were still among us.
Many will evoke his legacy and speak on Dr. King’s behalf, but I’m sure he would not be comfortable with all that is claimed in his name.
Since King’s 1968 assassination, there’s been much progress in Civil Rights and race relations, though accomplishments in the last decade are arguably disappointing. Much is yet to be accomplished.
Dr. King’s approach to dialog and discussion remains more effective than today’s personal attacks between people groups and opposing politicians.
And that’s still a valuable and timeless lesson for America in 2022.
Bill Bunkley is a 15-year veteran Salem Radio talk show host based in west-central /Florida, airing weekdays 3 to 6 pm. Bill is also President of the Florida Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, which serves as legislative consultant to the Florida Baptist State Convention (Southern Baptist Churches throughout Florida), among other churches and entities. He has served as legislative consultant to the Convention for the last 24 years at the state capitol in Tallahassee.
