AT&T and Verizon are switching on their new 5G networks today.
But there may be a big problem. Ten of the largest U. S. air carriers are sounding the alarm that the 5G transmissions will interfere with onboard navigation equipment. That issue is intensified in bad weather.
People using their 5G smartphones in flight is a big deal.
The FAA is testing many areas around airports where a two-mile buffer from a runway is required. In addition, some makes, and models of aircraft may be more vulnerable than others to the 5G signals. If some planes must be grounded at a time when operational planes and crews are stretched thin because of the ongoing COVID challenges, cancelations may occur, passengers will be stranded, and a huge financial shortfall may follow.
