“A Just Advisory Opinion on Felon Voting Rights”

Bill Bunkley with Something to Think About

In Florida, when has a convicted felon fully repaid their debt to society for their crime?

Florida Constitutional Amendment 4 restoring felon voting rights remains at issue.

When proponents appeared before the Florida Supreme Court for their ballot language approval, their lawyer, former Florida House Speaker John Mills, asserted when asked by one of the justices that felons would have to pay court costs and restitution before having voting rights restored.

Proponents now want to change the rules and restore voting rights without felons financially reimbursing for their crimes

But once again, the Florida Supreme Court last week officially advised that court costs and restitution must be paid back before voting.

And that’s what the proponents agreed to in the first place.
