As a native-born son raised here in Tampa, Florida, the best-kept secret we Floridians have known for decades is now proclaimed worldwide.
Looking back to the ever-increasing road traffic over the last few years, we already knew that many who previously vacationed here as baby boomer kids from the Northeast were flocking back to retire here.
WalletHub, an online free financial consumer tools company, through research, declared the Free State of Florida the #1 state to retire. The factors considered in our top rating were a low tax rate with no state income tax, cost of living, quality healthcare, and fun activities.
I have mixed feelings about this distinction. I remember when a quieter Florida had significantly fewer people on the roadways, waterways, and wilderness areas.
A time new residents will never get to experience.
Bill Bunkley is an 18-year veteran Salem Media talk show host based in Tampa. The Bill Bunkley Show airs weekdays across central Florida from 3 to 6 pm. Bill is also President of the Florida Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, which serves as the legislative consultant to the Florida Baptist State Convention (Southern Baptist Convention Churches), among other churches and entities. He has served as the legislative consultant to the Florida Baptist State Convention for the last 28 years at the state capitol in Tallahassee. By the Grace of his Lord Jesus, he is today a cancer survivor diagnosed in 2018 with AML Leukemia, having successfully undergone a bone marrow transplant that same year. His wife is Toni, son is Zac, and they attend Idlewild Baptist Church.
