“Florida’s Guardianship Statutes Fail Our Seniors”
Bill Bunkley with Something to Think About
Baby boomers are aging out in record numbers, requiring protection and guardianship services.
Tuesday, the Florida Senate Children, Family, and Elder Services Committee took up SB 1710 by Jennifer Bradley dealing with Guardianship.
I was taken aback by the stirring, painful testimony of Floridians with horror stories on being deprived of a say and role in their loved one’s guardianship plan. We don’t talk about it, but when a senior has money, property, or other valuable assets, long-lost family members reappear, seeking to be appointed guardians.
SB 1710 would implement monitoring and reporting on lawyers, professional guardians, and court-ordered guardian plans. It’s a first step in exposing inequities that will later lead to statutory changes to protect our seniors as they should be protected.
