In 1879 our federal government first recognized George Washington’s Birthday as a government holiday in the nation’s capital. In 1885 it was expanded to include government offices nationwide.
Although February 22 is actually Washington’s birthday, the third Monday in February became the official celebration date in 1968. At the time there was a move in the Congress to name the date Presidents’ Day to honor both Washington and Abraham Lincoln, but that idea stalled in committee.
It wasn’t until the mid-1980 that retailers lead a movement to refer to this day as Presidents’ Day.
Although Presidents’ Day retail advertising clamors for our attention, it’s a good day to step back and reflect on our nation’s past Presidents, the good ones and the bad ones, and to pray for God’s direction for President Trump.
