When the COVID-19 pandemic first struck Florida, confusion arose as medical and governmental leaders scrambled to develop strategies to protect the public.
Nationally, the net result was a massive, unconstitutional governmental overreach regarding America’s churches.
In Tampa, Dr. Rodney Howard Brown of the River Church was arrested for his congregation’s refusal to adhere to a Hillsborough County COVID-19 emergency order. Thanks to Mat Staver of the Liberty Counsel, the charges were quickly dropped, and Governor Ron DeSantis supported The River Church’s right to assemble.
To recodify this right, I am pleased to report that SB 254/HB 215 Emergency Orders Prohibiting Religious Services or Activities saw final passage Wednesday in the Florida legislature.
The bill now heads to Governor DeSantis for his signature.
