After a long evening of debate, at 10:08 PM Thursday, the Florida Senate granted final passage to HB 5, The Unborn Baby and Infant Mortality Reduction Act, including a 15+ week abortion ban.
Governor DeSantis will sign the legislation.
In contrast, earlier in the week, Democrats in the U. S. Senate attempted to federalize and pass legislation rammed through the U.S. House of Representatives to approve abortions right up to the moment of a baby’s birth, including partial-birth abortions. That measure failed.
The new Florida law becomes effective on July 1. It is fashioned after a Mississippi law now pending before the U. S. Supreme Court. A decision is expected by July’s end.
Roe v Wade may be on the verge of being overturned.
If so, Florida is ready to assume the state’s rights on the issue of abortion.
